Our music team is fairly new to Encore Arts Centre, and we’re so excited to be growing.
This September, we’re welcoming Henna to the Encore team as our Vocal Coach and Vocal Director. We’re also thrilled to welcome Joseph back this fall as our Piano Instructor. While this is Joseph’s first time teaching with Encore, he is a YPC alum, so we’re especially excited to have him back in the Encore community! Matt has been part of the Encore team since April and is continuing to welcome students for guitar and drum lessons.
We’re excited to begin booking private music lessons for Term 1, running September through December. Whether you’re looking to start something completely new or continue developing your skills, our instructors are ready to help you find your sound and reach your musical goals!
Henna Matharu
Vocal Coach/Vocal Director
Henna Matharu is the Vocal Coach and Vocal Director at Encore Arts Centre. Born and raised in Dartmouth, Henna has always been surrounded by singing and musical theatre. Starting piano & singing lessons at age six and community theatre at age eight, she quickly discovered a passion for both performing and teaching.
With around seven years of teaching experience, Henna has worked with students across Nova Scotia with vocal coaching, choreography, and directing. While completing her Bachelor of Science in Biology at Mount Allison University, she also studied drama performance and various forms of theatre while continuing to perform in productions such as High School Musical and Belle in Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Since graduating, Henna has worked professionally in musical theatre across Canada, including playing Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz at Neptune Theatre and touring with Catalyst Theatre in Edmonton and Ottawa, including performances at the National Arts Centre.
Having started in community theatre herself, Henna understands the importance of creating a welcoming space where students of all ages can build skills, confidence, and discover their unique talents. As a vocal coach, she is committed to tailoring each lesson to the individual student, focusing on vocal management & technique, personalized warmups, repertoire, and audition preparation. With extensive personal experience in preparing for both in-person and self tape auditions, Henna loves helping students prepare for their own auditions, helping them feel confident and prepared to put their best foot forward in front of a casting team.
As a musical director, Henna has worked with local companies such as Storybook Theatre for over three years and loves helping performers discover a character and tell a story through song. She strives to make learning music fun, approachable, and efficient while developing each student's performance skills.
Henna is so excited to meet everyone and create a supportive partnership where individuals can grow in confidence, character, and their love of voice and musical theatre. We are thrilled to welcome her to the Encore team!
Henna's availability is Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings 6-9 ( Potential for Saturday lessons )

Matt Josey
Guitar/Drums/RockBand Coach
Matt is welcoming new students to Encore Arts Centre on Tuesday evenings for guitar and drum lessons!
With over five years of experience teaching music, Matt works with students of all ages and skill levels, from complete beginners to advanced musicians. He teaches guitar and drums in just about any style, helping students develop strong musical foundations while having fun exploring the music they love.
Matt also offers instruction in bass guitar, ukulele, music theory, and piano (Levels 1–3).
His teaching style is flexible and personalized to each student. Whether you thrive with structured, step-by-step learning or prefer a more creative approach with improvisation and exploration, Matt adapts his lessons to fit your goals, interests, and learning style.
Most importantly, Matt wants his students to feel confident, motivated, and excited to make music. Whether you're picking up an instrument for the very first time, looking to build your skills, or hoping to take your playing to the next level, he'll help you develop your abilities while keeping lessons engaging, positive, and fun.

Joseph Tran
Piano Instructor
Joseph is excited to be joining Encore Arts Centre as our Piano Instructor this fall!
Currently in his second year studying Computer Science at Dalhousie University, Joseph brings around 15 years of piano experience to his teaching. He began playing at just four years old and has worked through the Royal Conservatory of Music, studying both piano technique and theory along the way.
Joseph loves sharing his passion for music with others and is especially excited to welcome both new students and anyone he may have taught in the past. Before joining Encore, Joseph was part of the Young Performers Collective, where he taught and worked with students before taking a short break to settle into university life. Now, he's thrilled to be back doing what he loves!
When he's not studying or teaching, Joseph enjoys discovering new things and exploring interests like finance and emerging technology. And, for those wondering about the important stuff: his favourite ice cream flavor is Fluff ’n Udder from COWS!
Whether you're just starting your piano journey or looking to continue developing your skills, Joseph is excited to create a fun and supportive learning environment for every student.
Joseph is looking forward to meeting everyone and welcoming new and returning students to Encore Arts Centre this fall!
